Once we find the active fish, they are normally only on a small section of the reef. We also targeted wind protected mud flats with scattered shell around pinch points with current and nervous bait, with great success in 2.5-3 feet of water. Shrimp imitation lures with Fish Smack popping corks, with 14-18 inch leaders have still been producing the most bites for our anglers, resulting in great success on our chartered trips. On our live bait trips, live shrimp have produced consistently, and provided plenty of line tugging action for our fishing clients, fished under a popping cork and 24 inch leaders producing the most consistent bites. Looking forward to fishing after the first cold front as conditions continue to improve. Report by Captain Jeff Brandon, Get the Net Guide Services, LLC.

Baffin Bay

GOOD. 65 degrees. The first couple of cold fronts tend to bring fluctuating water temperatures and barometric pressure. These fluctuating conditions can be a tough time for anglers to hunt down trophy speckled trout, while the fish respond and alter their habits to these new elements. What was once a three foot in diameter dinner plate, is now 1-½ foot diameter dinner plate for these speckled trout. Making higher numbers of casts with a slow descending lure such as a Fatboy Corky or SoftDine in areas with baitfish activity is key! The water temperature has dropped significantly in the last two weeks from mid 80s to mid 60s. Fish have been really shallow, seeking warm areas with muddy bottom and scattered grass. Redfish are schooling shallow in grassy areas. Black drums are deep over rocks and or in muddy areas. Remember that black drums run in schools, so if you hook into one, throw back in that same area as fast as you can for another potential hook up! Stay safe and courteous out on the water and watch the weather as it can change drastically this time of year. As always, tight lines! Report by Captain Reanna DeLaCruz, Captain Reanna’s Baffin Bay Adventures. The trout bite is excellent with so many trout in the bay that as soon as the shrimp hits the water the cork disappears. You will have to work through the smaller fish to find the bigger trout. Redfish catches are sporadic, and a few black drum can be found in about four feet of water. Report by Gilbert Barrera, Baffin Bay Hunting and Fishing.

Port Mansfield

GREAT. 55-60 degrees. Fishing was a little slow this past week as a result of high barometric pressure. We still caught good fish along the grass lines but most came of soft plastics such as the KWigglers Wigalo’s. Trout were low in the water column while reds were a little more active. Things should improve this week as water temps warm again. Report by Captain Wayne Davis, Hook Down Charters.
